Concrete coating FAQs

Practical answers for garages, basements and patios, from the condition of the slab to how the finished floor will be used.

Choosing a coating

What is a decorative-chip floor?

It is a coating system with decorative flakes sealed into the finished surface. The flakes provide the appearance, while preparation, repairs and compatible coating layers determine how the system performs.

Are epoxy, polyurea and polyaspartic the same thing?

No. They describe different coating chemistries, and a floor can use more than one type across its layers. Ask what each layer does and why the complete system suits your slab and use.

Compare coating choices

Is polyaspartic always better than epoxy?

No single label settles the question. Compare preparation, moisture requirements, sunlight exposure, wear, cure and the specified layers. The system must fit the space, not just sound impressive in a quote.

Choose around your space

How do I choose chip color and texture?

Compare a representative sample with your walls, lighting and intended use. Ask about the finished texture as well as the flake blend, particularly near wet entrances or on an outdoor surface.

Concrete condition and preparation

Can a cracked or pitted garage floor be coated?

Often, localized damage can be repaired if the surrounding concrete is sound. Widespread deterioration or movement needs assessment first. Ask which repairs are included and what may remain visible.

Can you coat over peeling paint or old epoxy?

Loose material cannot provide a reliable base. The failing coating needs removal and the cause needs investigation. Any material left in place must be sound, compatible and prepared for the proposed system.

Understand old-coating removal

Why does concrete preparation matter so much?

A coating needs a surface it can bond to. Mechanical preparation removes weak material and creates the required texture. Cleaning alone does not necessarily remove old sealers, contamination or a weak surface.

Understand concrete preparation

Can oil stains or tire products affect the coating?

Yes. Contamination can interfere with bonding, even when the surface looks cleaner after a quick pass. Point out old spills and detailing products so the treatment can be included in the preparation plan.

Check contamination and bonding

Will cracks and control joints disappear permanently?

Do not assume so. Cracks and joints need different treatment depending on movement and purpose. A decorative coating cannot guarantee that a moving slab will stop moving.

Basements, patios and everyday use

Will a basement coating stop water coming through the floor?

No. A decorative finish is not a cure for a leak or drainage problem. Identify the water source and check the slab against the proposed system’s moisture limits before choosing a coating.

Evaluate basement suitability

Are coated floors slippery when wet?

They can be. Discuss expected water, footwear and traction before choosing the finish. Texture can be adjusted for the application, but no coating is slip-proof and spills still need attention.

Review wet-traction considerations

Can you coat an outdoor patio or covered porch?

A suitable slab and an exterior-approved system may make it possible. Sun, rain, drainage, moving joints and wet traction all matter. A covered porch still needs an outdoor assessment.

Is a coated basement floor a good choice for a family room?

It can be practical for cleanup and everyday use, but it still feels like a hard concrete floor underfoot. Compare warmth and comfort alongside appearance, and address moisture before choosing any basement flooring.

Compare indoor flooring priorities

Can the same kind of coating be used in a commercial space?

Some systems suit commercial use, but the specification must reflect traffic, cleaning chemicals, drainage and downtime. A residential garage specification should not automatically be carried into a kitchen or other demanding workspace.

Cost, scheduling and care

What affects the price of a garage coating?

Measured area, damaged concrete, old-coating removal and the selected system affect the quote. Steps, sidewalls and the area beyond the garage door should be named separately so you know where the work stops.

Compare coating estimates

Does a one-day installation mean I can park on it that night?

Not necessarily. Work duration and return-to-use time are separate. Get the actual schedule for walking, storage, vehicles and water exposure based on the coating and conditions at your home.

Understand coating return times

What needs to be moved before garage coating work?

Plan storage for vehicles, tools and loose items. Point out shelving, refrigerators and heavy equipment. Confirm the moving responsibilities and another entry route if the garage is your normal way into the house.

Plan access and storage

How do I clean and protect a coated floor?

Remove grit, clean spills and follow the installed system’s care instructions. Ask before using aggressive cleaners, abrasives or pressure washing. Keep maintenance instructions with your warranty for future reference.
