LVP and new-flooring FAQs
Compare vinyl plank, laminate and real wood, then plan the preparation, trim and transitions that make the finished floor work.
Choosing the material
What is the difference between LVP, laminate and engineered hardwood?
LVP is vinyl flooring. Laminate uses a decorative surface over a composite core. Engineered hardwood has a real-wood surface over layered construction. Their water limits, repair options and installation requirements are different.
What does prefinished hardwood mean?
The protective finish is applied before installation rather than finished in your home. Prefinished wood may be solid or engineered. It still needs the correct installation conditions and ongoing care.
Does waterproof LVP make my room waterproof?
No. A waterproof plank does not stop water from reaching the subfloor around edges or openings. Leaks and persistent slab moisture still need attention, and the product’s warranty has specific conditions.
Is LVP a good choice for dogs and kids?
It can be, when the product fits the room and traffic. No plank is scratch-proof. Grit removal, suitable furniture protection and prompt spill cleanup still matter. Compare repair options before buying.
Does a thicker plank or a higher wear-layer number mean better quality?
Neither tells the whole story. Compare the finish, core, locking system, installation requirements and warranty together. Look at several boards to judge texture, pattern repetition and appearance across a room.
What goes underneath
Can LVP go over an uneven floor?
The base must meet the selected product’s flatness requirements. A floating floor does not bridge serious dips or high spots. Extra padding is not a substitute for correcting the surface.
Can new flooring go over tile or another existing floor?
Sometimes, if the manufacturer permits it and the existing surface meets the requirements. Condition, height, grout lines, door clearance and moisture need review. Do not order on the assumption that removal can always be skipped.
Do I need extra underlayment if the planks already have a pad?
Not automatically. Added cushioning may be unsuitable for the locking system. Follow the exact product instructions; an attached pad also does not automatically replace required moisture protection over concrete.
Can LVP be installed in a basement or over a concrete slab?
Often, with an approved product and suitable slab conditions. Check moisture and flatness first. A leak or recurring water problem needs resolving before installation, even when the planks are sold as waterproof.
Does new flooring need to acclimate before installation?
Requirements vary by product and installation method. Confirm delivery, storage, indoor conditions and any acclimation requirement before scheduling. One product’s instructions should not be applied to another.
Installation details and budgeting
Can the floor run through several rooms without transition strips?
That depends on the product, room layout, total run and expansion requirements. Decide where transitions go before installation, especially where heights change or the floor meets another material.
Will my baseboards or base shoe need to change?
The perimeter needs a finish detail that allows the required expansion space. Confirm whether existing trim will be removed, reused or replaced, and who handles painting or touch-ups.
Can LVP be installed on stairs?
Some product lines have suitable stair parts. Confirm the tread, nosing, riser and landing details before ordering. Stair installation is a separate scope from floating planks across a room.
What should an LVP installation price include?
Compare the flooring, removal, disposal, subfloor preparation, installation, trim and transitions. Moisture treatment, stairs and moving may be additional. Ask which preparation costs are firm and which depend on what removal reveals.
Can you install flooring I have already purchased?
Send the exact product name, installation instructions and quantity before scheduling. Suitability and installation requirements need review first. Buying the material does not establish whether it fits the room or substrate.
Can damaged LVP be repaired or refinished later?
LVP is not sanded and refinished like wood. A damaged plank may need product-specific repair or replacement. Keep matching spare material and ask how future repairs would work with the chosen installation.
